Radar in your pocket?

Nokia Research Center are always brewing up something that let’s us peak behind the curtain of future mobile technologies. Some concoctions make it into our mobile phones, while others never make it outside the NRC building in Helsinki. “Mobile Radar” is definitely one I’d like to see in my handset sooner rather than later. Unveiled today during “Demo House 2010” at Aalto University located just down the road from Nokia’s headquarters in Espoo, the “Mobile Radar” demo shows how you can measure an object’s distance, speed, and direction using a mobile device. It’s essentially the same technology the police use in their radars to give you a $239,000 speeding ticket. (it’s true, in Finland, speeding fines are based on your salary) In the video shown below, you’ll see researcher Jani Ollikainen use his hand to adjust the music player’s volume, without ever touching the hardware. Even with an object in his way (like your pants pocket or even a wood door), the radar works without a hitch. In the second demo, you’ll see fellow researchers Terhi Rautiainen and Risto Kaunisto measure the distance, speed, and direction of a human walking. The possibilities are endless with this technology. How about a home security system that alerts you if there’s movement in your house? Or how about some cool new gaming? Check out the video below and post how you’d like to see mobile radar used! But don’t get your hopes up that you’ll see this in a Nokia handset very soon, it’s still just a prototype.

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty.

He asks one of his new students to stand and…..

Prof: So you believe in God?

Student: Absolutely, sir.

Prof: Is God good?

Student: Sure .

Prof: Is God all-powerful?

Student: Yes.

Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn’t! . How is this God good then? Hmm?

( Student is silent.)

Prof: You can’t answer, can you? Let’s start again, young fella. Is God good?

Student: Yes.

Prof: Is Satan good?

Student: No.

Prof: Where does Satan come from?

Student: From…God…

Prof: That’s right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

Student: Yes.

Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn’t it? And God did make everything. Correct?

Student: Yes.

Prof: So who created evil?

( Student does not answer.)

Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don’t they?

Student: Yes, sir.

Prof: So, who created them?

( Student has no answer.)

Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Tell me, son…Have you ever seen God?

Student: No, sir.

Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?

Student: No, sir.

Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?

Student: No, sir. I’m afraid I haven’t.

Prof: Yet you still believe in Him?

Student: Yes.

Prof: According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn’t exist. What do you say to that, son?

Student: Nothing. I only have my faith .

Prof: Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.

Student: Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

Prof: Yes.

Student: And is there such a thing as cold?

Prof: Yes.

Student: No sir. There isn’t.

(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events .)

Student: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat. But we don’t have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can’t go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold. Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it .

(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn’t darkness?

Student : You’re wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light….But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it’s called darkness, isn’t it? In reality, darkness isn’t. If it were you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn’t you?

Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can’t even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.

Now tell me, Professor.Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?

(The class is in uproar.)

Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor’s brain?

(The class breaks out into laughter.)

Student: Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor’s brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain,sir.

With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?

(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable .)

Prof: I guess you’ll have to take them on faith, son.

Student: That is it sir… The link between man & god is FAITH. That is all that keeps things moving & alive.

It’s not the fault of the student if he fails, because the year ONLY has 365’ days.

Typical academic year for a student:

1. Sundays-52, Sundays in a year, you know Sundays are for rest. Days left 313.

2. Summer holidays-50 where weather is very hot and difficult to study. Days left 263.

3. 8 hours daily sleep- 130 days GONE. Days left 141.

4. 1 hour for daily playing- (good for health) means 15 days. Days left 126.

5. 2 hours daily for food & other delicacies means 30days. Days left 96.

6. 1 hour for talking means 15 days. Days left 81.

7. Exam days- per year at least 35 days. Days left 46.

8. Quarterly, Half yearly and festival (holidays)-40 days. Balance 6 days.

9. For sickness- at least 3 days. Remaining days=3.

10. Movies and functions - at least 2 days. 1 day left.

11 That 1 day is your birthday

How can you study on that day???

Microsoft is this week preparing to take the gloves off in its fight with arch rivals Apple and Google.
On Thursday the software giant will release Windows 7, likely to be the most popular version of its operating system since Windows XP was launched in 2001. The company is also expected to give more details on another big gamble — its first shops.
But what analysts are most interested in is how Microsoft will tackle the rise of “the cloud” — vast data centres that host numerous softwareapplications remotely, removing the need to buy upgrades in a box or maintain clunky hard drives in the home or office. In a market where Google and Apple have big ambitions to run these huge, virtual mainframes, it means that Windows 7 could be the last of its kind.
Google, the search giant, announced in the summer it would launch a free PC operating system, Chrome OS.
Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive, will unveil Windows 7 at a press conference in New York on Thursday. Analysts are also expecting him to give further details on Microsoft’s plans for standalone stores promoting its software and devices, including the Xbox computer games console and mobile phones running Microsoft software.
Microsoft-watcher Matt Rosoff said the company would be keen to address the rise of Google as a software provider and reveal how it will compete with other online software services. With more services from word processing to picture storage and editing now available online, Rosoff said: “Microsoft has a tough job to do convincing companies and consumers that an operating system still matters.”
Microsoft’s last upgrade of Windows was a marketing disaster. Bugs plagued Vista after its launch in January 2007. Windows 7 has so far received mainly favourable reviews and analysts hope it could kickstart corporate IT spending.
Apple lags far behind Microsoft, but its has been taking the lead in mobile devices with its iPod and iPhone. Microsoft is now looking to beat Apple at its own game and roll out a series of shops. Analysts expect Ballmer to announce the opening of the first dedicated Microsoft store in Scottsdale, Arizona, with more to follow. It has also struck back at Google with the launch of an improved search engine, Bing.
Both Apple and Microsoft release results this week.

The 0.63-inch thin Archos 9 feels pretty sturdy, but one major complaint is that it feels heavy. Archos says it only weighs 1.2 pounds, but something about the balance is wrong, because it felt heavier than that in my hands. The hardware is pretty simple—a 9-inch resistive touchscreen (no multitouch) with a few surrounding physical buttons.

There is a Ctrl+Alt+Delete button and a keyboard trigger on the right, the latter which quickly launches Win 7’s finger-friendly keyboard. (Archos will also market a USB keyboard along with a case.) If you don’t like using your finger on the screen, there is a tiny optical trackpad on the right and two mouse buttons on the left side. The touchscreen is pretty responsive, and there is a stylus on the back, so I don’t see the need to really reach for the bitty mouse. I’ve always found optical trackpad annoying as hell.

The Archos 9 comes with Windows 7 Starter (remember that means no wallpaper changing or Aero) and its 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z515 processor and 1GB of RAM run it well. Watching a 720p Windows Media clip was decent, and when I fired up Wi-Fi and launched a browser, I was able to watch some streaming Hulu videos.

It only has 60GB of storage space, which could get cramped if you plan on keeping loads of video on it but doesn’t seem like a deal breaker to me. My biggest worry is battery life. It has a 4-cell battery (which is actually swappable) but I am guessing it won’t get more than 3 hours of juice.

He’s a more convincing writer than JK Rowling, while his plots exhibit a far great depth of research than anything James Patterson’s ever come up with. Theoretically, that must make Dan Brown the greatest living popular novelist.

OK, he’s not Tolstoy, but he does have an extraordinary talent for hooking a reader (however sceptical) and making completely absurd scenarios and ancient myths almost believable.

Secrets are what Brown really deals in, of course. And secrets by their very nature are hugely appealing. Who can resist? And now - after a long wait - we have his third thriller featuring the rugged, good-looking Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon.

Once again, the deftness of Brown’s plotting and the sheer pace with which he wraps layers of Earth-shattering meaning around his core secrets effectively means we quickly forget the initial, often very flaky, premise behind them. Yet we have come somehow to believe in their power - and the very dire consequences if Langdon does
not locate not just the lost, but actually the last symbol.

One of Brown’s trump cards from the very beginning has been his ability to shift the action from the old world to the new. Here, we’re in Washington DC, a city swamped with hidden Masonic messages and ancient mysteries.

Just take the Capitol building, where Langdon is lured under a false pretext only to discover the severed and strangely tattooed hand of his dear friend and mentor Peter Solomon.

As any symbologist worth his salt knows, this Hand Of Mysteries is an invitation to uncover the real secret of humanity, or at least the power of transformation. However, this message has been brought not by an angel but by a demon.

Needless to say, Brown wraps it all up beautifully in one puzzle after another.
While masonic secrets might not quite have the polemical cachet of the Holy Grail, once again the entertainment factor couldn’t be higher.
